DSIP is a nine-amino-acid peptide that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is thought to act as a neuromodulator influencing delta-wave (slow-wave) sleep. It appears to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, lowering circulating corticotropin and cortisol while affecting somatostatin and other neuroendocrine outputs.
