Cortexin is a low-molecular-weight mixture of neuropeptides and amino acids derived from bovine or porcine cerebral cortex. It is proposed to exert tissue-specific neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects by modulating the balance of excitatory and inhibitory amino acids, reducing glutamate excitotoxicity, and lowering oxidative stress and free-radical damage in neurons. Experimental and clinical reports also describe upregulation of neurotrophic factors and improved bioelectrical activity of the brain, supporting its use in ischemic, traumatic, and cognitive disorders.
